Mechanism and Design of Sequencing Batch Reactors for Nutrient Removal

Description

The sequencing batch reactor (SBR) is perhaps the most promising and viable of the proposed activated sludge modifications today for the removal of organic carbon and nutrients. In a relatively short period, it has become increasingly popular for the treatment of domestic and industrial wastewaters, as an effective biological treatment system due to its simplicity and flexibility of operation. Mechanism and Design of Sequencing Batch Reactors for Nutrient Removal has been prepared with the main objective to provide a unified design approach for SBR systems, primarily based on relevant process stoichiometry. Specific emphasis has been placed upon the fact that such a unified design approach is also by nature the determining factor for the selection of the most appropriate cyclic operation scheme, the sequence of necessary phases and filling patterns for the particular application. The proposed basis for design is developed and presented in a stepwise approach to cover both organic carbon and nutrient removal, domestic and industrial wastewaters, strong and specific wastes. The merits of model simulation as an integral complement of process design, along with performance evaluation of SBR models are also emphasized. Scientific and Technical Report No. 19

Gavin Smith: Great Eastern Railway

Great Eastern Railway

Description

The history of the Great Eastern Railway

After learning that their mother might still be alive, Kick, Bert, Scruff and Pin have vowed to search for her. They'll comb the whole world if they have to! But it seems Mum's last-known location was closer to home. With a bewildered Uncle Basti in tow, and their mysterious friend Bone determined to tag along, the kids set off for Sydney. The clues lead them to a place the Caddys have dreamed of visiting- the spectacularly noisy, gloriously exciting Luna Park. But it's not just fun and games they encounter here. What big surprises are in store? The Sunday Times No.1 bestseller. 'Sixty special forces against 100,000 - a feat of British arms to take the breath away' Frederick Forsyth. They were branded as cowards and accused of being the British Special Forces Squadron that ran away from the Iraqis. But nothing could be further from the truth. Great Eastern Railway free epub Ten years on, the story of these sixty men can finally be told. In March 2003 M Squadron - an SBS unit with SAS embeds - was sent 1,000 kilometres behind enemy lines on a true mission impossible, to take the surrender of the 100,000-strong Iraqi Army 5th Corps. From the very start their tasking earned the nickname 'Operation No Return'. Caught in a ferocious ambush by thousands of die-hard fanatics from Saddam Hussein's Fedayeen, plus the awesome firepower of the 5th Corps' heavy armour, and with eight of their vehicles bogged in Iraqi swamps, M Squadron launched a desperate bid to escape, inflicting massive damage on their enemies. Running low on fuel and ammunition, outnumbered, outmanoeuvred and outgunned, the elite operators destroyed sensitive kit and prepared for death or capture as the Iraqis closed their deadly trap.

Blackwater download pdf

Conn Iggulden: Blackwater

Blackwater

Description

A dark, chilling psychological thriller from the number one bestselling author of the Emperor series. Blackwater is being published as part of the Quick Reads initiative on World Book Day 2006. How do you know when you're in too deep? Davey has always lived in the shadow of his older brother, a smiling sociopath who will stop at nothing to protect himself and his family. But when the shadowy figure of Denis Tanter comes into Davey's life, how far will the bond of brotherhood reach?

The final word on the world's greatest rock band, Led Zeppelin. They were 'the last great band of the sixties; the first great band of the seventies'; they rose, somewhat unpromisingly, from the ashes of the Yardbirds to become one of the biggest-selling rock bands of all time. Mick Wall, respected rock writer and former confidant of both Page and Plant, unflinchingly tells the story of the band that wrote the rulebook for on-the-road excess - and eventually paid the price for it, with disaster, drug addiction and death. WHEN GIANTS WALKED THE EARTH reveals for Blackwater download PDF the first time the true extent of band leader Jimmy Page's longstanding interest in the occult, and goes behind the scenes to expose the truth behind their much-hyped yet spectacularly contrived comeback at London's O2 arena last year, and how Jimmy Page plans to bring the band back permanently - if only his former protege, now part-time nemesis, Robert Plant will allow him to.

The Dirty Dust: Cre Na Cille

Description

Now available in paperback, the original English-language translation of O Cadhain's raucous masterpiece Mairtin O Cadhain's irresistible and infamous novel The Dirty Dust is consistently ranked as the most important prose work in modern Irish, yet no translation for English-language readers has ever before been published. Alan Titley's vigorous new translation, full of the brio and guts of O Cadhain's original, at last brings the pleasures of this great satiric novel to the far wider audience it deserves. In The Dirty Dust all characters lie dead in their graves. This, however, does not impair their banter or their appetite for news of aboveground happenings from the recently arrived. Told entirely in dialogue, O Cadhain's daring novel listens in on the gossip, rumors, backbiting, complaining, and obsessing of the local community. In the afterlife, it seems, the same old life goes on beneath the sod. Only nothing can be done about it-apart from talk. In this merciless yet comical portrayal of a closely bound community, O Cadhain remains keenly attuned to the absurdity of human behavior, the lilt of Irish gab, and the nasty, deceptive magic of human connection.

Guy Gibson: Enemy Coast Ahead

Enemy Coast Ahead

Description

First published in 1944, Guy Gibson's Enemy Coast Ahead quickly became regarded as the classic Bomber Command book, following Gibson's RAF career from flying the Hampden and Manchester at the beginning of WWII to the triumphant return home of the Lancasters from the famous 1943 Dambuster raid which Gibson led and for which he was awarded the Victoria Cross. Enemy Coast Ahead is also the inside story of life in Bomber Command throughout the first five years of WW2, culminating in breath-holding drama as the RAF planned, practiced and strove towards breaching the dams on that famous night in May 1943.

Lesley Wilkins shows how to create traditional blackwork embroideries using simple stitches on evenweave fabric. Step by step photographs and a wealth of charts illustrate how traditional motifs, patterns and borders can be combined to create stunning designs. Lesley then goes on to show how to create band samplers inspired by those on which sixteenth century embroiderers collected their favourite designs, including figures, flowers, plants, birds and animals. Lesley Wilkins combines a deep knowledge of and appreciation for historical embroideries with her own flair for design and practical teaching skill. This book contains all you need to know to produce beautiful embroideries inspired by history. Enemy Coast Ahead pdf It is now six years since the secret disaster at Jurassic Park, six years since the extraordinary dream of science and imagination came to a crashing end the dinosaurs destroyed, the park dismantled, and the island indefinitely closed to the public.

The Kokoda Track, 1942. Jack and Hoshi are soldiers on opposite sides in the war who meet in battle, discovering that they have much more in common than they had ever realised.Photographs in the Mud is a beautifully illustrated and moving story of events on the Kokoda Track during the Second World War from the point of view of two soldiers - one Australian, the other Japanese. It tells a compassionate story about the personal human tragedy of war, for both the combatants and their loved ones at home. 'But I'm not a Hebrew! So why should I read a letter addressed to Jewish believers?' Because the author's warnings and A Midsummer Night's Dream: York Notes Advanced pdf appeals ('Don't go back, do go on') are needed by Christians teetering on the slippery slope of backsliding or simply standing still. For the eager believer, still running the race, this letter offers a new perspective on both the Old Testament and the Lord Jesus. It answers the crucial question: where is he now and what is he doing? People saw him as the Prophet and will see him as the King, but Hebrews sees him as the Priest we all need. Yet he is 'the same yesterday, today and for ever'!

Professor of Islamic History Robert G Hoyland: In God's Path: The Arab Conquests and the Creation of an Islamic Empire

In God's Path: The Arab Conquests and the Creation of an Islamic Empire

Description

In just over a hundred years-from the death of Muhammad in 632 to the beginning of the Abbasid Caliphate in 750-the followers of the Prophet swept across the whole of the Middle East, North Africa, and Spain. Their armies threatened states as far afield as the Franks in Western Europe and the Tang Empire in China. The conquered territory was larger than the Roman Empire at its greatest expansion, and it was claimed for the Arabs in roughly half the time. How this collection of Arabian tribes was able to engulf so many empires, states, and armies in such a short period of time is a question that has perplexed historians for centuries. Most recent popular accounts have been based almost solely on the early Muslim sources, which were composed centuries later for the purpose of demonstrating that God had chosen the Arabs as his vehicle for spreading Islam throughout the world. In this ground-breaking new history, distinguished Middle East expert Robert G. Hoyland assimilates not only the rich biographical and geographical information of the early Muslim sources but also the many non-Arabic sources, contemporaneous or near-contemporaneous with the conquests. The story of the conquests traditionally begins with the revelation of Islam to Muhammad. In God's Path, however, begins with a broad picture of the Late Antique world prior to the Prophet's arrival, a world dominated by the two superpowers of Byzantium and Sasanian Persia, "the two eyes of the world." In between these empires, in western (Saudi) Arabia, emerged a distinct Arab identity, which helped weld its members into a formidable fighting force. The Arabs are the principal actors in this drama yet, as Hoyland shows, the peoples along the edges of Byzantium and Persia-the Khazars, Bulgars, Avars, and Turks-also played important roles in the remaking of the old world order. The new faith propagated by Muhammad and his successors made it possible for many of the conquered peoples to join the Arabs in creating the first Islamic Empire. Well-paced and accessible, In God's Path presents a pioneering new narrative of one the great transformational periods in all of history.

CIA agent John Wells has been undercover so long that his bosses are no longer sure he's still loyal - or even still alive. For years, Wells has been building his cover in the mountains of Afghanistan, his existence known only to a few senior CIA officials. But now he's coming home - and no one, including his CIA minder Jennifer Exley, knows what to expect. He is a man alone, used by two In God's Path: The Arab Conquests and the Creation of an Islamic Empire free download pdf adversaries and trusted by neither. And as terrorists prepare to unleash the most devastating attack in history, Wells knows he is the only man who can stop them. With or without the government's approval... When, against her better judgment, she gets involved with Amur leopard shifter Alonzo Massi, bakery owner Evangeline Tregre, unable to resist the call of her leopard shifter blood, finds her life in mortal danger then their secret lives are threatened by an enemy. Louise Gluck: The Wild Iris

The Wild Iris

Description

The Wild Iris was written during a ten-week period in the summer of 1991. Louise Cluck's first four collections consistently returned to the natural world, to the classical and biblical narratives that arose to explain the phenomena of this world, to provide meaning and to console. Ararat, her fifth book, offered a substitution for the received: a demotic, particularized myth of contemporary family. Now in The Wild Iris, her most important and accomplished collection to date, ecstatic imagination supplants both empiricism and tradition, creating an impassioned polyphonic exchange among the god who "disclose[s]/virtually nothing", human beings who "leave/signs of feeling/everywhere", and a garden where "whatever/returns from oblivion returns/ to find a voice". The poems of this sequence see beyond mortality, the bitter discovery on which individuality depends. "To be one thing/is to be next to nothing", Cluck challenges the reader. "Is it enough/only to look inward?" A major poet redefines her task--its thematic obsessions, its stylistic signature--with each volume. Visionary, shrewd, intuitive--and at once cyclical and apocalyptic--The Wild Iris is not a repudiation but a confirmation, an audacious feat of psychic ventriloquism, a fiercely original record of the spirit's obsession with, and awe of, earth.

Nneka's little brother Chidi is always saying that his favourite color is blue. When Nneka asks him why, he replies, "because the sky is blue and my best shirt is blue." So Nneka decides to teach him about other colors seen in their village -- red for the chiefs' caps, yellow for the "gari they eat, brown for the "okwe game board -- and to tell him why she likes them. Gelato: Simple Recipes for Authentic Italian Gelato to Make at Home

Description

So says Adriano di Petrillo, owner of Dri Dri, the fashionable artisan gelateria. Authentic Italian gelato is made with milk rather than cream, so it s much lighter and significantly lower in fat. Gelato is made by a process called mantecazione, where it is frozen and churned very slowly so it doesn t absorb too much air. This achieves a creamy texture without the fat. Gelato is surprisingly easy to make at home with a domestic ice cream maker. Try Adriano s simple recipes for Vanilla, Coffee, Bitter Chocolate, Cookies and Cream, and Tiramisu. Also included are recipes for fresh and fruity sorbets and granitas, including Green Apple and Mixed Berries. Suggestions for delicious ways to serve your creations include Bitter Chocolate Gelato with Cherry Compote; Lemon Gelato with Brioche; and Almond Gelato drowned with hot espresso. Ideas for gelato-based drinks include Italian classics such as a Rossini (strawberry sorbet with Prosecco) and Sgroppino (lemon gelato blended with vodka or Prosecco)."

Raymond Chandler: The Big Sleep and Other Novels

The Big Sleep and Other Novels

Description

Raymond Chandler was America's preeminent writer of detective fiction, and this Penguin Modern Classics edition of The Big Sleep and Other Novels collects three of the best novels to feature his hard-drinking, philosophising PI, Philip Marlowe. Raymond Chandler created the fast talking, trouble seeking Californian private eye Philip Marlowe for his first great novel The Big Sleep in 1939. Often imitated but never bettered, it is in Marlowe's long shadow that every fictional detective must stand - and under the influence of Raymond Chandler's addictive prose that every crime author must write. Marlowe's entanglement with the Sternwood family - and an attendant cast of colourful underworld figures - is the background to a story reflecting all the tarnished glitter of the great American Dream. The hard-boiled detective's iconic image burns just as brightly in Farewell My Lovely, on the trail of a missing nightclub crooner. And the inimitable Marlowe is able to prove that trouble really is his business in Raymond Chandler's brilliant epitaph, The Long Goodbye. Raymond Chandler (1888-1959) was born in Chicago. It was during the Depression era that he seriously turned his hand to writing and his first published story appeared in the pulp magazine Black Mask in 1933, followed six years later by his first novel, The Big Sleep, adapted into Howard Hawks' classic 1946 film noir, starring Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall. If you liked The Big Sleep and Other Novels, you might enjoy Dashiell Hammett's The Thin Man, also available in Penguin Modern Classics. 'One of the greatest crime writers, who set standards that others still try to attain' Sunday Times 'Raymond Chandler invented a new way of talking about America, and America has never looked the same to us since.' Paul Auster, author of The New York Trilogy 'Chandler wrote like a slumming angel and invested the sun-blinded streets of Los Angelos with a romantic presence' Ross Macdonald, author of The Drowning Pool

To help you find your way around there's the detailed Street Atlas, a public transport map in the cover, plus a pull-out map. Acclaimed illustrator Evan Turk has created a stunning multidimensional story within a story that will captivate the imagination and inspire a new generation of young storytellers. " Before John Glenn orbited the Earth or Neil Armstrong walked on the moon, a group of professionals worked as Human Computers, calculating the flight paths that would enable these historic achievements. Among these were a The Big Sleep and Other Novels free ebook coterie of bright, talented African-American women. Segregated from their white counterparts by Jim Crow laws, these colored computers, as they were known, used slide rules, adding machines, and pencil and paper to support Americas fledgling aeronautics industry, and helped write the equations that would launch rockets, and astronauts, into space.
